Education

Idle Motion have a strong commitment to creating accessible visual theatre which can be enjoyed by all. We met while studying drama at The Cherwell School, Oxford and through our shared experience of exciting and invigorating theatre lessons we were spurred on to become a professional theatre company. We want to pass on to others this excitement with  theatre, and this commitment is at the heart of all our educational work.

Idle Motion have been running workshops for over 4 years both nationally and internationally to a range of ages and abilities from primary school to secondary school, theatre professionals and INSETs for drama teachers.

Our workshops draw on the exercises and techniques we use in our own creative process. We explore  playful and innovative routes into devised and physical theatre, drawing on skills such as storytelling, verbatim text, puppetry and object manipulation,  physical characterisation and improvisation.

We also offer workshops which have a focus on a particular show and give participants an intimate insight into how we create our work.  These workshops can be very successfully combined with  students seeing the show itself, so they are able to  study in detail how theatre exercises can be developed in different ways and put into practice when devising theatre .

We prefer not to work on a 'one workshop fits all' basis and are happy to tailor workshops around the current syllabus or requirements of the groups we work with. Timings are flexible; workshops can run from 1 hour to a full day.

"It was great to have such a talented bunch of young people, to whom our students felt they could relate, in the drama department for the day. The workshop was relevant and fast moving and challenged our pupils to stretch themselves creatively in the devising process. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend any school or college to have Idle Motion in to work with their pupils"
Julia Crossley, Drama teacher at Bradfield College.

This was a truly inspirational day. The students really enjoyed the workshop and have had their eyes opened to the creative possibilities at their fingertips. Our classes following the day with Idle Motion have bubbled with possibility and ideas. The imagination and freedom of the workshop was a true eye-opener. I would highly recommend Idle Motion to everyone and hope to work with them again.
Tim Fessler, ex Head of Drama at St Thomas More Catholic School

Idle Motion’s workshops were extremely well received by our students, who were stretched both creatively and technically by the work. The workshops were also superbly well delivered – purposeful, fun, engaging and inspiring. But above all, there is a clear understanding of what it is like to be a student. The workshop leaders are genuinely passionate about teaching and making theatre with young people.
Gavin Henry, Drama teacher at Sevenoaks School, Kent

As an experienced teacher with 20 years of inset experience behind him, I can say, it is the very best I have ever been to....Not only did I enjoy taking part in a non-threatening environment but each step lead me to the next. The ideas we worked with are immediate, specific and relevant – everything I want to take away with me.
Brendan Benson, St Margaret’s School
